About

Initial establishment of RCE Yogyakarta started as a responds of earthquake in 2006 with aimed to rehabilitate post disaster as well as to respond the illiteracy reduction program, supporting SMEs and in line with university commitment for green campus and renewable energy. As to RCE Yogyakarta slogan “Together with Community, Promoting Changes towards Sustainable Development through Education”, now, the focus of RCE Yogyakarta expand from the existing to community based problems related to the region such as development of green city, restoration of coastal land, river restoration, disaster management and rehabilitation, zero waste agriculture, capacity building within schools and among youth etc.

RCE Yogyakarta secretariat is within university which is itself organized by Directorate of Community Services UGM. It comprises of many stake holders from units within UGM as the main secretariat as well as stakeholders within regions such as universities (State University of Yogyakarta, UPN, USD, ITY, UTY etc), local government and NGOs. The RCE secretariat is function in coordinating ESD related programs and activities as well as take actions on implementations. Each stakeholders are responsible for sustaining the programs within the units.

RCE Yogyakarta main slogan is “Together with Community Promoting Sustainable Development through Education. RCE Yogyakarta main secretariat is in university which plays important roles in implementing Education for Sustainable Development. HE provides information, space for learning and awareness towards importance of sustainable development; able to mobilize people towards better future. HE lecturers/academic staffs have main functions to develop, disseminate and transform SD based Science Technology, Arts and Humanity through education and research. UGM consist of various disciplines and expertise and potential for producing activities or comprehensive programs which can be used as reference for policy makers within community or by local government. All of these functions are expressed with university strategic plan 2012-2017, together with community Promoting Sustainable Development through Education. These ESD related strategic plan are Development of learning systems (intra-, co-, and extra-curriculum) which are able to solve local, national and global challenges; conducting research and its products which environmentally friendly, applicative and responsive towards community, nation and country’s problems and challenges and can be used as national reference; Community services which is able to support sustainability of community independency and prosperity; Development of physical resources management system which is accommodative and environmentally friendly and Strategic collaboration, synergy and sustainable with partners.

Vision of the RCE

As a center which cares and proactively plays roles in saving the world from damage. RCE Yogyakarta develop concept and technology which support sustainable development and implement it at and with community, which can be done through education in the field of Sustainable Development through formal, non-formal and informal education; giving information, increase awareness, provide space for learning and action as well as community mobilization towards establishing nation with more sustainable future; and actively involve and play roles in national and international networking to share and collaborate in Education for Sustainable Development

Partners

The exchanges between the partners were done by doing collaboration, knowledge transfer, experience sharing, benchmarking of any ESD activities actors in formal or informal education in Yogyakarta Region in the form of RCE gathering along with field visit activities to the RCE Yogyakarta partner’s villages.
